LEYSDOWN COASTAL PARK BIRD REPORT 1993 - 1994

                     

During 1993,I made forty visits to the Park between March and November and 1994,Twenty four.                                                                              

CANADA GOOSE 1993-On September 21st,forty flew in off the sea from the NE and headed towards the Swale reserve.

SHELDUCK 1993-During April up to four were present in the ringing area.There was no evidence of breeding.1994-During April/May,up to six in the ringing area,again no proof of breeding.

MALLARD 1993-During April one pair was present in the area.1994-From March 4th,into May a pair again frequented the area,no proof of breeding.

MARSH HARRIER 1993-Singles over the fields/marsh bordering the Park on June 4th,August 8th and October 2nd,with two on July 12th.One in off the sea on August 15th,with one out on November 3rd,1994-Up to three over the fields/marsh,between March 26th and September 3rd.

HEN HARRIER 1993-Single ring-tails over the fields/marsh,on March 11th and April 9th.0n November 5th one flew over the Park/ringing area.

MONTAGU`S HARRIER 1994-A male came in off the sea on April 30th and then flew south.

SPARROWHAWK 1993-One on October 30th.

KESTRAL 1993-Recorded in all months,but only infrequently until September.After which it was seen on almost every visit,singles only.1994-Much the same as for 1993.

HOBBY 1993-One flew low through the area to the north on September 19th.1994-One flew south on May 3rd.

MERLIN 1993-A female flew low through the area south,on November 3rd.1994-Three singles,September 24th,October 16th and 24th.

GREY PARTRIDGE 1993-During the spring and early summer two pairs frequented the ringing area and during the autumn a covey of up to eleven were present.1994-One pair was present during March/April and May.During October a covey of up to seven was present.

WATER RAIL 1994-On October 16th,a day of NE winds and occasional drizzle.One dropped out of the sky and ran into the nearest cover.

MOORHEN 1994-One was seen on October 24th.

WOODCOCK 1993-One in bushes by the cafe on October 31st.The same day that one flew in off the sea at Sandwich.

SNIPE 1993-Singles over the area on September 21st,October 16th and 31st.

WHIMBREL 1993-On August 14th,six flew over the area towards the Swale reserve,followed by four on the 21st.

GREENSHANK 1993-one was heard on August 8th.

WOOD PIGEON 1993-First noted on March 21st,when 6 were present,two of which were displaying.During the summer about six pairs were present.Two nests were found in small hawthorns.About ten were present up until strong northerly winds in mid October,moved them out.1994-Up to twenty present between early March and the beginning of October.On October 8th,thirty came in off the sea.

STOCK DOVE 1994-Asingle bird feeding in the area on June 4th.

TURTLE DOVE 1993-First noted on May 30th,when two flew south.A nest was found in a small hawthorn on July 12th.When I looked at the nest again in October.I was amazed to see that it had been made out of thin wire.The last bird was seen on September 4th.1994-On May 3rd four flew south.

COLLARED DOVE 1993-During the spring one flew north on March 27th,with two on April 10th.In the autumn two flew south on September 18th,with five on 21st.During October,two flew north on 9th,with three south on 16th.1994-One flew north on May 7th,six south on September 25th,with two on October 24th.On November 5th,thirty were feeding in fields,along the Park`s western boundary. 

LITTLE OWL 1993-One was calling from the manor on October 30th.1994-single birds were heard calling during September and October.

SHORT EARED OWL 1993-Singles on March 27th and April 18th.On April 10th,two were hunting in the ringing area between 07:00-09:00.1994-One was seen hunting over the fields/marshes,on April 9th.

SWIFT 1993-One flew south on May 19th and on the 30th,four were seen.On June 12th,circa one thousand flew through from dawn until 08:30,into a NW wind.Six north on July 18th,with two on July 30th.The last bird was seen on September 11th.1994-On May 7th,circa one hundred passed through south  from 05:00-09:00.On May 28th,thirty flew north,with forty on June 26th.

KINGFISHER 1993-One was ringed on September 16th.

GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER 1993-One was ringed on October 9th and one flew south towards the manor trees on the 16th.1994-On October 1st,one flew south,it or another bird a short while later flew back and ended up in a net.

SKYLARK 1993-There was very little evidence of a spring passage,although there were several small flocks feeding in the area on March7th.On the 27th,seven were in song,about six pairs bred.During October nine flew SW,on the 2nd ,twenty five flew north into a NW,on the 3rd,with thirty north on the 17th and twenty south the following day.1994-During the spring and summer,no more than ten were in evidence,although nesting did take place.Fifteen came in off the sea on September 26th.A bigger movement occurred on October 9th,a day of light SE winds,circa five hundred came in off the sea,from 08:00-09:00,most heading NW.

SAND MARTIN 1993- In the spring,two flew north on May 18th and May 30th.Then more sightings until six flew north on July 12th.Fifty flew through,mainly south,on August 15th,with four south on 30th.The last birds were seen during September,with thirty south on 11th and ten the following day.Most of the movements were into the wind.1994-During the spring three flew north on April 30th,with one on May 7th.In the autumn,two flew south on August 14th and September 3rd,with thirty on 25th.

SWALLOW-1993-As with the above species,very little spring passage noted.On May 3rd,four flew north and on the 30th,one was seen coming in off the sea.During the summer two to four birds were present,there was no proof of breeding.There was a build up of numbers from July 12th.Twenty passed through north,while thirty were feeding over the area.The first big movement occurred on August 15th,when circa one hundred and fifty passed mainly south into a SW wind.There was then mainly a small passage noted on most of my visits,with birds mainly flying south.Although on the odd day when the wind was from a northerly direction,birds passed both south and north.On September 18th,another reasonable movement occurred,when one hundred and fifty passed south.Smaller numbers were in evidence by October,but forty passed south on 9th and on the 16th four flew north into a NE wind.The last bird was seen flying south on 27th.1994-During the spring small numbers only.Two flew north on May 3rd,with fifteen on 17th.There was no proof of breeding.By August numbers had started to build.On the 14th twenty were feeding in the area and two flew through south.It wasn`t until September though until reasonable numbers started to appear.On the 14th,circa sixty were feeding in the area,with smaller numbers flying through south.On the 24th,circa sixty flew south.The biggest movement occurred on the 25th,a day of light E-NE winds,when circa one thousand passed south.The following day circa five hundred followed.Two flew south on October 9th.

HOUSE MARTIN 1993-Again very little spring passage noted.One flew south on May 19th,with four north on 30th.No more birds noted then until July 12th,when one flew north.Ten flew south on August 14th,with twenty the following day.The only big movement I saw was on September 18th,when circa one hundred and fifty passed south.Last seen on October 3rd,when ten were in the area.1994-Poor year,the only spring record was of two flying north on May 28th.During the autumn singles were seen on August 14th and 23rd.On September 3rd,thirty flew north,with six south on 23rd.

MEADOW PIPIT 1993-During the spring no movements were noted,but small flocks were present on March 27th,when these numbered fifty birds.On the same day four birds were singing,about eight pairs bred.The first sign of autumn movement was on August 21st,when six flew south.During September passage was noted on only three visits.On the 5th,twenty were present and seven passed north into a NWwind.On the 16th,again circa twenty were present and fifteen flew south into a SW wind and on the 25th,40 were grounded,with small numbers flying through north into a NE wind.Very little movement was noted in October and there was usually less than ten present on any one visit.The best movement occurred on November 3rd,when sixty passed south into a light SE wind.1994-Ten about with four singing on March 11th and on the 26th,twenty were noted to be in the area (bred).The first reasonable autumn movement noted was on September 25th,when fifty flew south ,with smaller numbers the following day,Fifty again passed south on October 9th.Small movements were then noted until my last visit of the year,on November 5th,when twenty passed through south.

YELLOW WAGTAIL 1993-Small spring passage.Two on April 18th,followed by two on May 3rd.On the 19th,two birds were present and three flew north.There was no proof of breeding.Autumn passage may have started on July 12th,when two were seen.Seven present and eight south on the 18th.On August 15th,the best movement of the autumn was noted,when at least twenty five passed south.There was then only movements of less than ten,until the last bird passed south on September 19th.1994-During the spring,one was present on April 19th,six passed north on the 30th,with six south on May 7th.No proof of breeding.During the autumn,four north on August 14th,with two about on the 22nd.The following day twenty flew south.The last movement was noted on September 3rd,when three also passed south.

PIED WAGTAIL 1993-All the records were confined to the months of September,October and November,when a total of ten flew south on ten dates.1994-During the spring singles flew south on March 11th and May 7th,with two on March 26th.In the autumn singles flew south on September 24thand October 24th,with four on November 5th.

WREN 1993-Best year so far,although the first was not noted until September 12th.From one two two were then noted on almost all of the remaining visits.Three on October 9th and 16th.1994-One was singing in the bushes by the cafe on March 11th,two singing on the 26th.One was trapped on April 9th.During the autumn,one on August 23rd,with up to two seen on four visits during October.Two on November 5th,which was the last ringing session this year.

DUNNOCK 1993-During the spring,from one to two were present between April 7th-25th,some times singing.Single young birds were ringed in August,with a total of ten by the end of the month.From the beginning of September until October 9th,from one to three were present on most visits,with a maximum of 5 on September 25th.1994-During the spring two were in song from March 11th.On June 26th,one juvenile and one adult were trapped.Between August 14th and September 24th,severn were  trapped,There was a noticeable influx on September 25th,when three were ringed,with fifteen about with four high flying birds.Up to two were then present on most visits until my last session on November 5th.

ROBIN 1993-Singles on March 7th and June 4th.There was then no more records until August 4th,when the first young bird was ringed.Five more were trapped during the remainder of the month.From September 5th,one to three birds were trapped on most of the remaining visits,with a maximum of five on September 25th.A good year for this bird and also for the above two species.1994-During the spring two were ringed on March 26th ,with a noticeable pale bird on May 7th.From August 14th until September 24th,up to two were then ringed on most visits.There was a small influx on September 25th and 26th,with up to ten present.From then until my last visit on November 5th,numbers fell to between one to three birds.

REDSTART 1993-One was ringed on September 15th.The day before there had been a fall of this species.There was rain,with a strong NE wind.1994-A period of NE winds from September 24th-26th,saw two ringed on the 24th,with singles on the 25th and 26th,three more were also seen on the 26th.On October 1st,the birds ringed on the 24th and 25th were re-trapped.During this period there had been a high over northern Europe,with NE winds.It was also overcast at Leysdown.

WHINCHAT 1993-During August singles on 21st,29th and 30th.From September 5th,until the 18th,birds were present on four visits,with a maximum of five on the 12th.A total of seven were trapped.1994-During September there was three on 3rd,two on 25th and eight on 26th,a day of NE winds.Singles on October 1st and 9th.

STONECHAT 1993-Two on October 18th,26th,29th and 30th,with three on November 1st.1994-No sightings'

WHEATEAR 1993-Four on March 21st and April 10th.During the autumn,one on August 21st.Then from one to three on nine dates until the last on October 3rd.1994-Two singles on March 26th and May 7th.During the autumn,two on August 22nd,one on 23rd,two on September 25th,three on 26th and singles on October 1st and 9th.

BLACKBIRD 1993-Three pairs were present during the summer.I had no evidence of any spring movement. A good autumn passage however,was noted from October 3rd.On a number of visits birds were watched dropping out of the sky into the bushes.Maximum numbers were on November 1st,when circa thirty were present.Ten on which  came in from a northerly direction.Best year so far,forty were ringed.1994-During March,four were about on the 11th,with five on 26th.During the summer,two pairs were noted.The first autumn influx was noted on September 26th,when at 6 were about.Another small influx was noted on October 8th,with ten about.Numbers then fell until November 5th,when six were seen.

FIELDFARE 1993-Agood year.First seen on October 27th,when one flew out of the bushes at first light.Later that morning circa fifty were found feeding in a field,which borders part of the the Park.On the 30th.circa one hundred came in from the north and dropped into the bushes.Later that morning they  departed to the south.The following morning,circa two hundred were present,about one hundred of which later departed to the south.The birds had all gone the following day.On November 3rd,circa two hundred passed over south and ten were present on 7th.1994-Six on October 16th,with one on November 5th.

SONG THRUSH 1993-Singles noted on March 21st and 30th,June 4th,July18th.with four in August on four dates,All the birds were ringed.The first influx was noted on 2nd,when six were present,two of which were grey birds.Futher small falls occurred on September 11th,October 9th,11th,18th,26th and November 3rd and 7th.1994-One was seen on April 9th and on May 7th,a female was trapped with a brood patch and a male was in song.During the autumn numbers were generally small,with small influxes of no more than four,on September 25th,October 8th and November 5th,

Redwing 1993-First seen on October 17th,when three were ringed.It was then present on most of the remaining visits.With forty on the 30th-31st,twenty about and forty south on November 1st,sixty south on the 3rd and thirty present on the 7th.1994-Six on October 16th.A poor year.

MISTLE THRUSH 1993-Singles on April 10th and June 4th.Both of which flew south.1994-Two flew south on October 17th,followed by one on the 24th.

SEDGE WARBLER 1993-A pair had a nest in the bushes near the cafe.The male was first seen and heard on May 19th,the same day that a second was heard not far away.Three juveniles were ringed on July 18th.In all seventeen were ringed,one in May,five in July and August,with six in September.1994-Two ringed on April 30th and August 23rd.A poor year.

REED WARBLER 1993-One ringed on June 4th,was unusual.Best autumn so far with forty five bird days over sixteen visits,between August 8th and October 2nd.Best catch was six on August 8th.1994-Four were ringed on August 23rd,two on September 3rd,with singles on 24th and 25th.During October two on the 1stand singles on the 8th and 17th.

LESSER WHITETHROAT 1993-One was trapped on September 23rd.1994-A single juvenile was ringed on June 26th.

COMMON WHITETHROAT 1993-A male was ringed on May 30th and a male and female on June 4th.The female had a brood patch.Singles were then ringed on July 18th,September 12th and 25th,with three on August 9th.1994-During May,one was singing on the 28th.It or another was later trapped that moring and ringed.During the autumn singles ringed on August 23rd and 26th.

GARDEN WARBLER 1993-One was ringed on October 9th;1994-On May the 3rd,one was singing in the bushes near the cafe.Later that morning it flew into a net and was ringed.During the autumn one was was ringed on September 3rd.

BLACKCAP 1993-Singles ringed on October 2nd and 16th,with two on September 19th and three on October 3rd.Best year so far.1994-During the autumn,one was ringed on September 14th,two on the 25th and four the folling day.

CHIFFCHAFF 1993-Three on March 21st,with singles on April 7th and 10th.During the autumn on September 16th,three were seen.Then singles on the 23rd,October 2nd and November 1st,1994-Singles ringed on March 11th,April 30thand May 7th.During the autumn singles ringed on September 25th and 26th,with two on October 1st.

WILLOW WARBLER 1993-Singles on April 7th and 18th,with three on the 10th.During the autumn,fourteen bird days over eight visits between August the 8th and September 12th.1994-One was ringed on April 19th,with six on the 30th and two on May 7th.During the autumn three ringed on August 14th,two on 22nd and one on 23rd.

YELLOW BROWED WARBLER 1994-One was ringed on October 8th.A morning of light overcast and light SE winds.

PALLAS`S WARBLER 1994-One was ringed on October 16th.A morning of overcast,with a moderate NE wind.The bird was re-trapped the following day.

GOLDCREST 1993-Recorded on each visit between September 23rd and November 7th.Three ringed on October 31st,was the highest daily catch.1994-One was ringed on March 26th.During the autumn, one were trapped on September 24th,with two on 26th.October was the best month for numbers,with five ringed on 16th and twelve on 17th.The 16th and 17th,were days with NE winds.

FIRECREST 1993-One ringed on October 30th,was still present the following day.The morning of the 30th,was cloudy,with a NE wind.1994-Singles ringed on April 30th and September 24th,The morning of April 30th,was clear at first,with a light overcast by 06:00,SW.The morning of September 24th,was overcast,with a NE wind.Two Redstarts were also ringed.

PIED FLYCATCHER 1993-One was ringed on September 11th.1994-One was ringed on August 23rd.The moring had been overcast,with a light westerly wind.The before there had been a moderate NE wind.

BEARDED TIT 1993-Six flying about on October 9th,looking lost.They later flew of SW,towards the marshes.

LONG TAILED TIT 1994-Eleven were ringed on October 24th.

BLUE TIT 1993-Two on March 7th and 27th,with singles on 21st and April 25th.Birds were then present on all visits from Jult 12th-November 3rd.A maximum of eight on October 3rd.1994-Singles ringed on April 19th and May 28th.On June 26th,one adult and two juveniles were ringed.From August 14th-September 14th,just singles were seen.Then from the 25th to November 5th,up to six were about on most visits.

GREAT TIT 1993-Present on nearly all of the visits from July 12th to October 30th.With a maximum of just two on five dates.1994-One was seen on March 26th.With one adult and three juveniles ringed on June 26th.From August 23rd until my last visit on November 5th,from one to two were then seen on most visits.

MAGPIE 1993-Seen on almost all visits,with a maximum of five on July 18th,September 5th and October 18th.1994-Seen in all months March to November,with a maximum count of 5 on October 9th.

CARRION CROW 1993-From one to two were seen on most visits.1994-Again,on most visits from one to two were seen.Although on,October 16th,fifteen flew south.

STARLING 1993-One hundred and fifty on March 7th and 27th,Fewer thereafter,until the early autumn build up,of a post breeding flock.On July 18th,circa one hundred were feeding in the area and a roost  formed in the bushes near the cafe in early August.Which built up to circa six hundred by October.It had dispersed by the end of the month.1994-During the spring up to fifty were present on most visits.Towards the end of June,a roost formed again in the bushes.Which increased to circa five hundred by September.Thousands were feeding on the marsh in October,by which time the roost had gone (by this time most of the trees and bushes were bare).On November 5th,small flocks were seen arriving in off the sea.

HOUSE SPARROW 1993- Only small numbers in the area,until a roost formed in the bushes near the cafe in mid August.Which held up to one hundred and fifty until it dispersed in mid September.Small numbers again thereafter.1994-Small numbers only,until a roost formed in the bushes during May,which held up to fifty birds,increasing to one hundred by September.By November 5th,small numbers only remained.

TREE SPARROW 1993-Two flew north on October 26th.

CHAFFINCH 1993-Two on April 10th and singles on 18th and May 19th.The latter bird was in song.During the autumn,singles on September 23rd,October 3rd,16th and 18th.1994-One was heard on March 11th and on 26th,twenty flew south.On April 30th,a male was ringed and on May 28th a female was ringed ,which a a brood patch.During the autumn,only from one to two were seen during September and October.

BRAMBLING 1994-One was seen on September 26th.

BULLFINCH 1994-One was ringed on April 19th.

GREENFINCH 1993-Two males were seen on March 21st and May 19th.During the autumn,small numbers only.Until and flock of circa two hundred were found feeding along the sea wall,on October 30th.By November the 7th,most had moved on.1994-One was seen on March 11th and one was singing on April 19th.In the autumn,less than ten,until early September when forty were about.Numbers then fell again until October 9th,when thirty flew south,followed by forty on November 5th.

GOLDFINCH 1993-One was seen on April 10th.With six in the bushes on May 19th and four on June 4th.From July until September,less than fifteen were present.Numbers then began to build up from mid September to a peak of seventy on September 23rd.After which the numbers fell away to only one to two,until my last visit on November 7th.1994-Two were seen on March 11th and singles flew south on March 26th,April 19th and May 3rd.Two were seen in the bushes on May 28th.From August 14th,up to thirty were feeding in the area.Increasing to sixty by October 9th.after which numbers fell away.Two flew south on Noveber 5th.

SISKIN 1993-One was ringed on September 25th and singles flew south on October 9th and November 3rd.1994-Singles seen flying south on March 26th and September 26th.

LINNET 1993-During March small numbers were seen flying over north.Birds were not in residence however until the 27th,when seven were singing.circa,twenty pairs bred.By early August there was a post breeding flock of one hundred,reaching two hundred by mid month.During September the first movements were noted.With sixty south on the 11th and one hundred and fifty the following day.The post breeding flock had fallen to just forty by mid October.Small numbers continued to be seen passing south,up untl my last visit in November.1994-One was seen on March 11th.On March 26th,fifteen were about,with one to two seen flying south.Numbers then increased to circa thirty around the bushes by May,with many breeding.By August a roost had formed,containing circa one hundred birds.Numbers fell away at the roost during September and October,to just a feeding flock of sixty.The only movements noted was seventy south on on September 25th,sixty on 26th and thirty on November 5th.

MEALY REDPOLL 1994-One was ringed on October 16th. 

REDPOLL sper 1994-One flew south on October 16th.

YELLOWHAMMER 1993-One flew south on November 1st. 

REED BUNTING 1993-Present in all months,with two to three pairs breeding.During the autumn,numbers built up to twenty by mid September and remained around that number until my last visit in November.The highest count however,was of sixty birds,which flew south on November 3rd.1994-One on March 11th,two on April 9th.With two pairs about during May.During the autumn under ten were present on most visits,up until October,when numbers increased to  forty.However by the end of the month,numbers had fallen to under ten again.

CORN BUNTING 1993-May have bred,one to two pairs.The only movements noted,were in September and October.When on six dates,small numbers flew over north.1994-One was singing on April 9th.Numbers during the autumn built up from six at the begining of September to sixty during October.Most of these were feeding on plough,on the Park`s western border.
