BITS AND PIECES

Although a misty start,it cleared quickly.(0700-0930) New Hythe,west scrub.

BIRDS RINGED

Blackcap  18

All were young of the year.

Generally on the bird front it was very quite,apart from two noisy Jays and a G S Woodpecker.

The Sparrowhawk was was on a neighbours roof (31st) and the Hobby was seen again,this time during the afternoon of the 30th.

TOTAL 13 all were young birds.Some of the Blackcaps are now carrying small fat reserves.

August 20th.

Yesterday during the evening and again today,we had a Hobby over our garden.

August 20th (Sandwich and Oare Marshes)

The ringing at Sandwich this morning was rather slow.The best bird caught in the nets was the above Kingfisher.I looked in on Restharrow scrape and was surprised to see eight Green Sandpipers,the most I have seen together.
Although the Dowitcher was out of photographic range.The Bonaparte`s gull was quite close to the road.(top Dunlin)

August 19th (Headcorn)

Jeanette and I spent a very nice afternoon in Headcorn,Watching the air show from the comfort of Bob Bland`s garden.

August 16th (Sandwich Bay)

A male juvenile Blackbird,with unusual plumage colouring.

I spent this morning ringing at Sandwich.There was a reasonable fall of birds (the night sky was mainly clear),79 birds were ringed,with a good overall selection.Garden Warblers,Reed Warblers,Willow Warblers,Sedge Warblers,Blackcaps and best of all another Nightingale,amongst others.

Sunny and warm (0800-1000) East scrub.

BIRDS SEEN - Sparrowhawk 1,Nightingale 2,Common Whitethroat 4,Lesser Whitethroat 1 and Goldfinch 50+.

August 6th Sandwich Bay)

Green Woodpecker (juv) Willow Warbler and Wood Warbler.

I spent this morning ringing at Sandwich.It was a rather chilly start,but later warmed up nicely.Although the night sky was clear,there was a good fall of birds.Most of which were Willow Warblers,with 85 ringed.The best bird caught in the nets was a nice Wood Warbler.the third so far this autumn.Late July,early August is a good time to see this species in Kent.
