Hi,my name is Alan Woodcock.I have been bird-watching in the area for nearly fifty years and (bird ringing)since 1980.I hope to keep up to date sightings of wildlife I have seen (mainly birds)with occasional diary entries of past times.

WISHING YOU ALL A MERY CRHISTMAS
AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR
Its been a funny year. The cold wet spring, had an affect on breeding productivity for many species.Yet for those of us that keep yearly totals its been a good year at New Hythe.Red necked Grebe,Scaup,Great White Egrets,Short eared Owl,Red-rumped Swallow,Goldeneye,White fronted Geese and Hen Harrier helped boost the total.
Siskin and Redpolls remain hard to locate and this autumn/winter Redwing and especially Fieldfare are in very short supply.
Nice male Scaup, first seen on the 25th.
The last time a Scaup was seen at New Hythe, was three years ago.A female remained in the area from November 2017 into March 2018.This is the first adult male to be seen,as far as I know since 1998.
On December 3rd,I found a nice male Goldeneye on Brookland lake. The lake now holds cerca 150 Tufted Duck, one Scaup and one Goldeneye.
Bright,but cold,light northerly.
Apart from an increase in Tufted Duck numbers (150 on Brooklands),wildfowl numbers remain low.On Abbey Meads, just 9 Pochard,6 Gadwall and circa 30 Coot.
Along the river I saw - 1 Green Sandpiper 1 Redshank 1 Snipe 30 Lapwing 45 Mallard and circa 55 Teal.Perhaps over the next few days, with the predicted colder weather moving down from the north. This will bring about a change
Redwing numbers also remain low and I have still only seen one Fieldfare..
